How do I enroll my children?

Call our business office at 909-307-6312. A GLC staff member will take your name, student’s names, grade level, phone number, and address. This information is passed on to an Independent Study Teacher (IST) who will contact you to set up an appointment.

In addition to the internal school forms, specific documents must be provided by the family to complete each student’s enrollment packet. The documents are:

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Student’s Immunization record
  3. Proof of Residency- Copy of a current utility bill or property tax bill stating the parent’s name and physical address. Date must be current.
  4. If in High School, copy of most recent transcript
  5. Current or any past or closed Individualized Education Plans (IEP) or 504  if applicable

Students must be 5 years of age on or before December 2nd of the school year.

Can my child enroll in a traditional school and Gorman’s Independent Study Program?

Students can not be enrolled in two schools at the same time.

How much does it cost?

There is no cost for tuition. Gorman provides curriculum resources that fulfill the state requirements for a standards-based education.

How do we get curriculum?

After you and your IST discuss different options for suitable curriculum, the IST will order the material from the Warehouse.  If the curriculum is in stock, the IST will be able to pick up and deliver the items to you.  If the item is not in stock and it is available for purchase,  it may take up to 6 weeks to receive the material into the warehouse.

Can we use religious materials or curriculum?

Gorman Learning Center is a State funded Charter School, therefore we are not allowed to provide religious curriculum or materials.

How often do we meet with our Independent Study Teacher (IST)?

The minimum meeting requirement with your IST is once every Learnig Period or approximately once every 20 school days. At that time the IST will review all assignments completed, collect work samples, learning logs and assign work for the next period.

What is a learning log?

A learning log is a document  similar to a calendar. The student documents their daily instruction and work on the learing log. It is signed by the student, parent, and teacher verifying the work completed for the learning period. The learning log will be provided to every student by the IST.

What if we can’t meet with our IST?

A meeting must be re-scheduled and the meeting must occur within 5 school days of the originally scheduled meeting. Upon missing a meeting, the IST will let the office know and file a missed meeting report (MAR).

What is an MAR?

An MAR is also called a Missing Assignment or Meeting Report. This form is filled out by the IST upon the circumstance of a missed meeting or lack of assignment completion.   The IST will complete the form including options of intervention. The report is then filed with the office.

Students are expected to complete a minimum work portfolio of 80%. If the  portfolio is deficient a MAR is filled out and filed.  The student then has 5 days to complete the missing work and turn it into the IST.  If the student fails to complete the work, then a second MAR is completed and the student has 5 days to complete the assigned work.  If, after the 10 day cycle, the student still has not completed their work, they will be withdrawn from the program. The MAR reports are cumulative during the school year.

How many hours do students have to work?

The amount of time spent working each day depends on the students  level, workload, and subject matter. However, the average student spends 4 to 6 hours completing their assignments each school day. High School students are expected to spend a minimum of one hour per school day per course.

How do I get a work permit?  How many hours?

“Regular work permit” forms can be obtained on our website under Students, Counseling.  “Entertainment Work Permits” are obtained directly by parents from the California Labor Commission website.  The amount of hours a student is allowed to work depends on the student’s age at the time of employment.

How do I get a copy of my transcript?

Parents or students must submit a written request for transcript to the business office in Redlands. Request for Transcript forms are located on our website under “Forms”, “Student”, “Request for High School Transcript”.   Forms may be faxed, mailed, or emailed.  All transcripts go out in a timely manner in the order they are requested. For special requests, contact our High School Counselor directly.

What about Drivers Education?

There are three options that our students can use for Driver’s Education.

  1. Book work only – Students may take the Driver’s Education book work to receive credits to meet the graduation requirement.  They will NOT be issued a Certificate of Completion at the end of this course; it is for high school credit only.
  2. Online Driver’s Education Vendor – Our student’s may take advantage of our online Driver’s Education course.  They need to contact their IST for more information.
  3. Outside Agency – Student’s may take Driver’s Education through an outside agency.  Parents are responsible for the fees if they choose to use an outside agency.

We do not offer Drivers Training.

How do I co-enroll in college? Get books for class? How many classes can I take? How are the credits evaluated?

Students interested in taking college courses need to contact their IST to discuss possibilities.  Students are limited to two college courses per semester.  Students need to contact their college of choice for specific guidelines and concurrent enrollment procedures. Students need to go through their IST to obtain college texts.  Students can not be reimbursed for college texts that they have already purchased. Purchase of college texts are limited and by the semester.

Credits are evaluated and converted when the student turns in an official transcript from the college showing that they have passed the course.

Is there a high school graduation?

Yes, there is a graduation ceremony held for our eligible seniors.  “Jostens” contacts graduates regarding their purchases for caps and gowns, class rings, announcements, and other accessories.

Is summer school an option?

Summer school requests are taken on a case by case basis for students who are currently enrolled.

Are there Learning Centers?

Gorman has Learning Centers in specific geographical areas. Students can take supplemental enrichment classes in the subject areas of math, english, science  music, art and electives. For areas with a Learning Center, please refer to the  schedules for class offerings. Generally the classes are one to two days a week.

What is a VCI?

A VCI, also known as a Vendor Course Instructor, is a contracted individual or company that offers supplemental educational services. Students’ should contact their IST if they are interested in VCI. Please see our current list of VCI’s under the Parent tab and VCI.

How do VCI’s work?

The number of VCI classes a student can take is directly related to the determined budget for the VCI program at the outset of every semester.  The student will meet with their IST to determine which courses would be most beneficial for them. Once the appropriate course amd vendor have been selected, the IST and parent will sign a requisition form. The form is then submitted for approval to the business office VCI Coordinator. This approval is required before receiving any vendors’ services.  Cost vary depending on the vendor, class chosen, and frequency of meetings.
